Use Registrar APIs to manage your Domain Name Portfolios

GDPR and Whois

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has thrown the whois protocol into some disarray with many registrars blocking full and proper whois access. If you use GoDaddy, for example, the port 43 whois output no longer contains any contact information. This makes it difficult to verify your own email addresses and other data in domain records.

Domain Registrar APIs

Domain Registrar APIs

The registrar APIs provide an alternate and simple solution for easily managing your own domain names. Top registrars like GoDaddy and Namecheap offer APIs for accessing and managing your own domains.

Using the registrar API has additional advantages because you can access your full and real data instead of whatever is shown in port 43 whois. This means that you can check and verify your contact details even if you are using a proxy service.

Accessing Registrar API Tokens

Registrar API is supported by registrars like Namecheap, Godaddy, Dynadot, and by resellers like Resellerclub, OpenSRS and Enom.

To be able to use registrar APIs you have to obtain API access tokens from the registrar. You can easily do this by logging into your registrar's management platform.

The access tokens will vary from registrar to registrar. In some cases it is just a single key and in other cases a pair of keys. Some registrars also require that you white list your IP addresses so that connections from only the white listed IP addresses are allowed.

Whois using Registrar API & a Free Utility

Most domain registrar APIs include options to retrieve domain records including the contact information. So, it is trivial to create a script to obtain the 'whois' data using the API calls.

We have created a simple and free whois api client using registrar APIs to do just that. You can find more information about it at the whois API client page.

You can download the script and install it on your web server to use as your own private whois lookup tool for your own domains. The script includes an option to password protect it as well.

Applications that Support Registrar APIs
